STANDARDS IN HEALTH & SAFETY
Safety Commitment & HSSE Policy
At Standard Directional Services, Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental (HSSE) stewardship is a core operational priority and a fundamental component of our corporate culture. We are committed to conducting all business activities in a manner that protects our employees, clients, contractors, communities, and the environment.
Our HSSE Policy establishes the framework that governs how we operate across all projects and jurisdictions. It defines clear expectations for leadership accountability, regulatory compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement. Safety is not viewed as a compliance obligation—it is embedded in our planning, engineering, field execution, and decision-making processes.
We believe that operational excellence begins with proactive risk management. Our organization maintains disciplined safety systems designed to prevent incidents, reduce exposure to hazards, and promote a culture of responsibility at every level of the company.
HEMP – Hazard and Effects Management Process
HEMP is the foundation of our safety management system. It provides a structured and systematic methodology for identifying hazards, assessing risk exposure, and implementing effective control measures before work begins.
Through HEMP, we:
Identify and evaluate operational hazards and potential effects
Implement layered safeguard controls to prevent incidents
Continuously assess the effectiveness of safety systems
Detect vulnerabilities within processes or procedures
Develop corrective and recovery measures when gaps are identified
By integrating HEMP into our operational workflow, Standard Directional ensures that risk mitigation is proactive, measurable, and continuously improved. This disciplined approach strengthens system integrity, enhances field performance, and reinforces our commitment to delivering safe, reliable directional drilling services in demanding environments
HSSE Management System
Leadership and Commitment. Leadership and commitment are essential to the life of all the other components of the system.
Policy and Strategic Objectives are at the front of our system because they point the way, defining the direction for the company’s activities.
People are the instruments by which the system is brought to life. They need to be fully trained, there needs to be adequate resource and they need to have clear definitions of their responsibilities and the standards to which they should work. This is Captured in our Safety management documentation.
The Hazards and Effects Management Process (HEMP) is the heart of the management system. It is simply a systematic method of identifying hazards, assessing risk, putting controls in place to guard against those risks and defining recovery measures should an incident happen. From this assessment, weaknesses in controls and recovery measures are identified and a remedial action plan is formed.
Planning and Procedures are required with respect to operations conducted in the business. This part of the management system also deals with the formation and testing of Emergency Response Plans.
Implementation, Monitoring and Reporting phase targets are set, key performance indicators are developed and monitored, and incidents (actual and potential) are reported and investigated so that learning points can be fed back into the management system.
Finally, there is a formal system of Audit and Management Review. An independent and internal HSSE audit programme is in place and management regularly review the management system to ensure appropriate coverage of risks in the changing business environment.
COR PROGRAM
The Certificate of Recognition program (COR®) is an occupational health and safety accreditation program that verifies a fully implemented safety & health program which meets national standards. The objectives of COR® are to provide industry employers with an effective safety and health management system to reduce incidents, accidents and injuries as well as their associated human and financial costs. COR® is now frequently used as a pre-qualifying and/or condition of contract by public and private project owners across Canada.
